Learning outcome 2

In this class I learned how to integrate my own opinion into my writing through the texts I used as sources. At first this was hard because I was not used to including my thoughts and strictly using what the text said. In the beginning I would write down my ideas and find quotes I liked even though they wouldn’t always match up exactly. As I found myself forming a better opinion on the topics, we researched I could add I could better find quotes that went right in with my opinion. For example, in my project three paper, I wrote, “The bad thing about social media and activism is that it can be completely performative for most due to the fact that “it doesn’t involve financial or personal risk; it doesn’t mean spending a summer being chased by armed men in pickup trucks. It doesn’t require that you confront socially entrenched norms and practices. In fact, it’s the kind of commitment that will bring only social acknowledgement and praise.”’ Instead of just saying Gladwell said, I put his words into my sentence which was using evidence to explain the opinion I formed. I then found it much easier explaining the quote because of how I integrated it into my own opinion. I also learned that rather than just saying what I think and making it purely opinion based doesn’t sound as good as when I use evidence from the text to tie in my opinion. It makes it sound much more valid and well researched.
